Operating a hydraulic breaker isn't rocket science, but using it smoothly and making it last — that takes some know-how. Here are a few tips the pros swear by.
Tip #1: Press first, then hit — no swinging in midair. Many beginners just slam the switch and let the chisel pound away in the air. That's called "blank firing" — low efficiency and bad for the machine. The right way: press the chisel firmly against the surface, make good contact, then fire. That way, the full impact force gets delivered where it counts.
Tip #2: Work vertically — don't use it as a pry bar. Keep the chisel perpendicular to the working surface. Angled strikes not only cause the tool to slip but can also bend the chisel or damage the cylinder. Remember, it's a hammer, not a crowbar — don't pry with it.
Tip #3: Stop every 10–15 seconds. Don't hold the switch down endlessly. If it hasn't cracked in twenty seconds, either the angle is off or the rock's too tough — time to reposition. Prolonged blank firing causes the piston to run dry, sending oil temperatures through the roof — not good.
Tip #4: Grease often, but don't overdo it. Apply grease every two hours, but just one or two pumps each time. Too much grease traps heat and clogs the seals — counterproductive.
