Daily Breaker Tips: These Bad Habits Are Slowly Killing Your Equipment
Some breakers last three to five years with barely any issues, while others need frequent repairs within a year. The difference comes down to daily habits.
Warm it up before starting. Don't slam the throttle the moment you get in. When hydraulic oil is cold, it's thick and offers poor lubrication, which accelerates cylinder wear. Let the engine idle for 3–5 minutes, give the breaker a few light dry strikes, and wait for the oil temperature to rise before normal operation.
Never use the chisel as a pry bar. The chisel is designed for vertical impact only — don't use it sideways to pry rocks. Doing so will bend the chisel, cause uneven bushing wear, and in severe cases, score the cylinder.
Don't hammer for more than 30 seconds straight. If a spot hasn't cracked after half a minute, change your angle. Holding it down nonstop will spike oil temperatures and age the seals prematurely.
Release pressure after work. At the end of each day, press the chisel against the ground to release residual pressure and clean off surface dust. This protects the seals and extends service life.
Stop immediately if something's off. If you hear unusual noises, see hydraulic hoses vibrating excessively, or smell something burning, shut it down and inspect. Don't let small issues turn into major breakdowns.
The breaker is a workhorse, but it's not made of iron. Treat it well, and it won't cost you a fortune in repairs.
